Incontinence underreported among seniors; Cleveland invention may aid diagnosis

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Urinary incontinence affects millions of older Americans but is likely underreported, according to the 2024 Urologic Diseases in America: Annual Data Report.

The condition, defined as the involuntary loss of urine during the bladder’s storage phase, was estimated to affect 6% to 8% of people age 65 and older each year from 2012 to 2021. Researchers noted the figures suggest both patients and healthcare providers may downplay or fail to document the problem.
